Motherboard BIOS Settings

This guide is more of a reference for myself, but it may help others so I am making it public. Many motherboards will have multiple PCIe slots available, but sometimes they require a bit of finesse to get everything working properly, especially when it comes to crypto-mining. This post will cover various motherboard BIOS settings to help you enable all your PCIe slots for mining.

Do note that I do not intend to go over every motherboard suitable for mining, just the ones that I have personally used. Most of these motherboards will be older boards as well, as a lot of my hardware is left over from the 2017 mining heyday.

However, a lot of people new to crypto mining are buying second-hand or new “old stock” at sale prices to build their rigs, so this information may still be of benefit to them. I still reference it whenever I need to redo a mining rig, or work on someone else’s.

Normally a mining rig is setup and runs for years before needing to be rebuilt, by then most of the “tricks” one uses are forgotten unless they are well documented.

This is the main purpose of this guide, to provide documentation of the settings (other than defaults) critical to getting a motherboard up and running with all (or nearly all) the PCIe slots functioning with GPUs.

Feel free to leave a comment for any other boards you feel may be useful and I may expand this list if warranted.

ASRock H170 Pro-4S

ASRock H81 Pro BTC R2.0

ASRock Z370 Extreme 4

Asus Z87-A

BioStar TB250-BTC

BioStar TB85-BTC

MSI Z170-A Pro

I was originally going to have all the information in one article, but WordPress does not like real long postings. I have instead linked each motherboard listed above to its own separate post, which maybe works out for the better anyway.
